The 2027 edition of NFPA 70E adds an important connection between electrical safety and equipment maintenance.
Section 110.3(C), Condition of Maintenance, now includes an informational note directing users to Informative Annex S for guidance on assessing equipment condition. Annex S, in turn, references NFPA 70B, Standard for Electrical Equipment Maintenance.
It may sound like a small addition, but the connection matters. Equipment condition is part of the electrical safety conversation because maintenance can affect how equipment performs during normal operation and during a fault. A circuit breaker that does not operate as intended, for example, can change how long fault energy persists.
We briefly introduced this connection in our overview of what changed in NFPA 70E 2027. Now, let's look at what "condition of maintenance" actually means and why NFPA 70B matters.
Equipment maintenance is not a new concept in NFPA 70E.
The standard has long connected electrical safety with properly maintained equipment. For example, whether equipment is considered to be in a normal operating condition depends in part on whether it has been properly installed and maintained.
Maintenance can also matter when assessing electrical hazards. Protective devices are expected to operate within their designed characteristics. If a breaker or other protective device is poorly maintained and takes longer than expected to clear a fault, actual conditions may differ from assumptions used in an arc flash analysis.
That's why understanding PPE requirements under NFPA 70E cannot be completely separated from understanding the equipment itself. PPE selection and electrical risk assessments depend on the hazards associated with the task and equipment, while maintenance helps support the equipment performance those assessments rely on.
The challenge is translating ‘properly maintained’ into a consistent, documented assessment of equipment condition.
That is where NFPA 70B becomes important.
NFPA 70E focuses primarily on electrical safety-related work practices. NFPA 70B focuses on electrical equipment maintenance.
As we've covered in our guide to the key differences between NFPA 70E and NFPA 70B, the two standards have different purposes, but they are closely related.
NFPA 70B establishes requirements for an Electrical Maintenance Program and provides a framework for determining maintenance needs based on factors such as equipment condition, operating environment, criticality and manufacturer guidance. Its maintenance intervals vary based on equipment type and condition, rather than treating every asset as though it operates under identical circumstances.
The 2026 edition also supports a more condition-informed approach to maintenance. Alongside required inspections, testing, and maintenance activities, equipment condition and collected data can help facilities make more informed maintenance decisions.

Instead of seeing equipment condition only during a periodic inspection, teams can observe trends over time and use that information alongside other maintenance inputs to help identify developing problems.

NFPA 70E 110.3(C) requires the Electrical Safety Program to include elements that consider the condition of maintenance of electrical equipment and systems. Its new informational note directs users to Annex S for guidance on assessing that condition. Annex S references NFPA 70B.
In practical terms, NFPA 70E is addressing the safety side of the equation, while NFPA 70B provides a maintenance framework facilities can use when evaluating equipment condition.
Think about a circuit breaker protecting a piece of critical equipment. An arc flash study may rely on an expected clearing time for that protective device. But that assumption depends on the device being capable of operating as intended.
Maintenance records, inspections, testing and condition data help facilities understand whether that assumption remains reasonable.
Continuous monitoring can add another layer of information. Temperature trends from bus joints, breaker connections and cable terminations can help teams identify developing thermal anomalies between scheduled maintenance activities. The goal is not to replace maintenance intervals, inspections or engineering judgment with a sensor. It is to give the people making those decisions more information about actual equipment condition.
So what should facilities teams do with this connection? Start by looking at how equipment condition is currently being evaluated and documented.
Review your Electrical Safety Program. Confirm that condition of maintenance is being considered where required and that your program reflects the current edition of NFPA 70E.
Connect safety and maintenance records. Arc flash studies, equipment maintenance history, inspection results and condition assessments should not live in completely separate conversations.
Document equipment condition. Maintenance records, inspections, testing and available monitoring data can help establish a clearer picture of equipment health over time.
Use condition data where it adds value. For critical equipment, continuous monitoring may provide useful information between scheduled inspections and maintenance activities.
Reassess when conditions change. Equipment modifications, abnormal operating conditions, maintenance findings or evidence of deterioration may warrant another look at existing risk assessments and maintenance plans.
Keep the standards in their proper roles. NFPA 70E and NFPA 70B complement one another, but neither can be reduced to a single technology or checklist. Facilities should use the applicable standards and qualified professionals when determining requirements for their specific equipment and work practices.
