The Reason for the Season
It has snowed here the last several days. Fresh snow always makes me happy around Christmas. I think because, for the most part, it is peaceful when it drifts down slowly from the sky and blankets the earth with pure white beauty. It creates an untouched canvas on which life can leave its mark. It’s like a fresh start. And a fresh start has a lot of meaning at Christmas.
I think my favorite Christmas carol is “O Holy Night” and my favorite part of that song is, “long lay the world in sin and error pining, ’til He appear’d and the soul felt it’s worth.”
“…and the soul felt it’s worth.” Those words get caught in my head sometimes.
I remember a pastor once telling me that he imagined the Trinity standing before the foundations of the earth were laid deciding how to contend with the issue of sin, knowing that creating the earth and humans – and giving us free will – that we would sin, but loving us so much that there needed to be a pathway to reconciliation. That pastor said that he just imagined Jesus standing there and without question saying, “Me. I’ll do it. I’ll go get them.”
And so He did. He threw off his deity and stepped down from where time knows no bounds and the reach of suffering is too short, and He cloaked Himself in the flesh of man and lived among us. To teach us. To love us. To encourage us. To challenge us. To correct and comfort us. To give us a fresh start by dying for us.
“…and the soul felt’s its worth!” Yes. Yes, it did.
